Activision has a history of bringing us great, addictive games that always come through. For example, Spider-man, Tony Hawk, etc. This is no exception. Although the name was changed to protect... well... no one really, Wreckless comes through as a definite hit. The power of X BOX and the brilliance of Bunkasha Publishing Co. is enough to make several great games. Let us be thankful for Wreckless.
I saw Wreckless and thought that it would be just another driving game. I read the preview in X BOX Magazine and thought it was going to be just another driving game that everyone but me thought was great. I played the demo and thought, "OH MY GOD! THIS IS HILARIOUS!" I rented the game and found out just what everyone saw in this game. Ah yes, I had fun. But now, it's time to see what makes this game so good...
Wreckless can be proud of the graphics it shows. The Replay mode showcases some of the most realistic graphics I have ever seen. When it comes to the sheer ability of X BOX, Wreckless does its best to take advantage. The gameplay graphics are definitely up to par. The detail is immense. Wreckless can be proud of all its graphics. The cars look great. The character models look great (I don't care what Transmetal says, they're character models). And if that wasn't random enough, the pudding looks great. That's right, the pudding in the first cinematic scene in Scenario A looks like real pudding.
Wreckless's hip, techno soundtrack is pretty cool so long as you like techno. If you don't, however, then this soundtrack is not for you. Now, if Wreckless took advantage of the X BOX's ability to create soundtracks (I think only a handful of games took advantage of that), it would be no problem whatsoever to get rid of that detail. Well, it still isn't a problem for a quick fix guy like me. Here's a tip. Turn off the sound and bring in a radio, cd player, cassette player, or, if you're that far back, an 8-track. Put the game in first person view and it'll just add to the "real car feel" of the game. The sound effects are basically what you'd find in any driving game. Well, almost any. You don't usually hear screaming civillians while playing RalliSport Challenge. The sound rocks, except for the techno (no offense to those techno fans out there, you guys rock...well that should get me out of the dog house, ah! stop typing, you fool).
Wheeeee! That's all I have to say. This game is really fun to just tear loose and go crazy. Some levels will kick it up with some demolition work, while other levels will knock it down with dull, "chase 'em" gameplay. Overall this game will amaze you, make your friends jealous, and piss all of you of at the same time. Isn't that what makes a really great game. Some levels are hard enough to make you want to tear your hair out, but the gameplay is so addictive that you just can't put it down. Hmm, you know, that could be very bad for your health actually...
The controls are actually pretty nice. The actual controls are done very well. The only problem I have is the lack of a car with tight steering, which really isn't a problem with the controls. The car turns when told and hits the gas when told. That is pretty much what is needed. If you have trouble turning, then you should make sure to use your brake when turning. The trouble is obviously that your going too fast for the turn. I like the ability to look around in camera view. that's a nice touch. Making a short story even shorter, the controls are great.
Everything about this game is above average. It is incredibly fun, and won't leave you unsiatisfied. The graphics are above almost all else. The controls are free and loose. The sound can get annoying, but you can always turn it off.
- + The cars sound and look real
- + The levels are varied and provide many different situations.
- - Some levels are dull
- - You can't hit civillians...what?
- ? Why is there a timer?
- ? I mean, really, what is the time limit of?
- ? Is driving around collecting crates really that necessary?
Graphics: 9/10

Remember, the tank is a priviledge, not a right.
